Language and Integration in Sweden

This topic is most relevant to : Swedish and International people interested in Ethiopian cultureHabeshas born and raised outside EthiopiaHabeshas Studying and Working outside Ethiopia.
Coming to a new country with new culture has its own challenges.Specially with learning and adapting the way of life.New people, new culture, new language come to our existence and present a new experience. As exciting it may sound, it comes up with new set of challenges as we need to adapt ourselves to the way of life in here.
babbel.com
A good starting point and an important step to achieving this is to enroll to a language class at the place where we reside. Most Swedish people speak English but speaking Swedish language is more advantageous if we plan to stay in Sweden. Most jobs do require that we speak the language.Higher education is given in both Swedish and English languages.
The language education is given in a couple of levels. The basic levels are labeled SFI-B and SFI-C and the advanced once begin at SAS. However, some people think that finishing this language levels would be enough. But in reality I have encountered some people who finished this level yet cannot communicate efficiently. In reverse, there are some who are at basic levels and can communicate well. This difference appeared due to how one integrate him or herself to the society. It depends on how many Swedish friends and colleagues one has made. So, this indicates that it's advantageous if we make friends. For some, this could feel a bit hard as Swedish people give you a distant yet polite impression at the beginning. An alternative way to practice and develop the language would be to go to language cafes where fellow students practice speaking the language.

Språk utbildning ges i olika nivåer.

Religious Institutions for Habesha in Stockholm

This topic is most relevant to :
Swedish and International people interested in Habesha cultureHabeshas born and raised outside EthiopiaHabeshas Studying and Working outside Ethiopia.

There are few religious institutions that Habeshas can visit in Stockholm. Depending on the type of belief you follow, there are establishments that one can stop by. Unlike many Swedes that does not indulge in the subject, Ethiopians have close ties to religion. As a result, coming from a nation where the value of religion is significant, it is difficult for one to experience the rituals and the ceremonies that are common in the establishments. It is even more uncomfortable if you are located in small town other than Stockholm.

EOTC Stockholm
Fortunately, there are some institutions that you can visit if you are in the capital. For instance, if you are a follower of the Orthodox Christian religion, there are four churches you can attend to. The first one is referred as "Silassie" (Trinity) church and is located in Centralplan, Nacka. Every late Wednesday and Friday afternoon there is a bible study session which begins and ends with a prayer. You can take bus number 444 from Slussen and head towards Västra Orminge. More information is available at http://www.eotc-trinity.se. The second one is placed closer to Hötorget. It is only one station from T-centralen. The third one is situated around Hagsätra metro station. You would need to walk approximately 150 meters to reach to the church. The prayer, song and gospel is conducted in Amharic and Geez for the churches stated above. Furthermore, there is one church that is located near Akalla. However, since this is an Eritrean Orthodox church, the prayer and the gospel are presented in Tigrigna and Geez languages.

stockholmsmoske.se
On the other hand, if you are a Protestant or a Muslim, there are few places you can visit. For example, the Jerusalem Evangelical church in Älvsjö is well known.Additional information about this church can be found at http://www.j-e-c.org. Moreover, there is a possibility to visit Sodermalmkyrkan, that  is located directly in front of Skanstull subway station exit. Here, the gospel and the prayer is administered in Swedish, however there is a live translation service into English language. On the other hand, if you are a Muslim, there are spiritual sessions one can attend to. The first is situated right outside of Kista station, next to the former Kulturhuset's library and the other is placed closer to Hallonberg metro station.

Coming from a religious background,it is not easy for Habeshas to exercise religion in Sweden. However,in this places, you would  be able to meet fellow Habeshas who are interested in religion and religious activities. Once you visit this places, you can be able to obtain respective weekly prayer and gospel schedules from leaders as well as service contributors. If there are places that you would want to mention, please leave a comment. Finally, what's your thought regarding spiritual life in Sweden? How do you see the challenges ?

Swedish Version

Graduation Ceremony in Sweden

purplejohn.weebly.com

In this post, I will  share my experience and observation about the graduation ceremony in Sweden.

The one thing I observed during my first year in Sweden was the festivity of graduation. During summer, by the end of my first year studies ,I was expecting to see some sort of graduation ceremony in the university I was residing. However, there was none, the campus was quite as usual. After asking around, I was surprised to find out that, unlike Ethiopia, a formal graduation ceremony mostly takes place upon the completion of high school studies in Sweden.

One of those days where the weather was hot, I was walking by the city center and I observed  many students standing up on a big decorated truck singing and chanting on their way.The female graduates were wearing white dresses and the male graduates were wearing suits. Both were wearing white hats. Some were waving their hat as they pass by the different parts of the town. Certainly,by the look of their joy,it's a memorable day for the graduates. And so it got me thinking, why there is no formal ceremony for students finishing high school in Ethiopia. What's your perception of the Swedish graduation ceremony?

After working or studying  in the week days, it is a typical routine for most Swedes to refresh in the weekend. There are a lot of bars and restaurants that are available to entertain people in the city of Stockholm.

Most of this places play music that are international. But what about people interested in Habesha music ? Fortunately, there are few places one can hang out to spend the night with habesha tradition and people. There are two well known  places in Stockholm that serve habesha music during the weekends.

The first one is Jebena Bar and Restaurant. This place is located inside the Rådhuset Station in the Blue line which is one station away from the central station, making it easily accessible for new customers. The other one is commonly referred as Fabriken located close to the Stadshagen metro station. It is approximately 4 minutes walk from the station.
