Korpen Football Week 48: The goals are here

Last week the tournament at Korpen Stockholm presented a remarkable improvement in terms of  the way the team performed. However, the score did not tell the full story.

As planned the previous week, we managed to find a training center which enabled us to  exercise different techniques. Even though the time slot that we booked was short, it did not hinder us from covering some of the most basic routines for a game of futsal. The players who participated that day worked very well on shooting and passing skills. There were expectation that most of the guys from our team would be coming to the training but few showed up.

As usual, the next day there was a match with one of the teams from our division. One can realize that they were a well organized team when one observes the way they play. After the kick off, we scored the first goal and it gave us good momentum to control the game. But momentarily the opposing team were able to score their first goal, which leveled the tempo of the game. After the half time break, we eventually managed to score the third goal. Just when we thought we had a better advantage, they were also quick to score the second. And few minutes before the final whistle, they scored the winning goal. Then we tried to level the score by creating pressure but we didn't succeed to do so.

Although we could not win the game, many of us were not disappointed. We were rather glad that we are starting to show real progress and learned that it is training that makes the difference. After this week's game, we will have a one- month break from the tournament because of the holidays. The team plans to use this period as a chance to improve performance and intends to obtain it by allocating a training time.

Korpen Football Week 47: Still work to do yet progress shown

The second week of our football tournament entertained a tangible progress when compared to the previous. Our team leaders finally brought the long awaited jerseys to us and we played dressing them. However, the score sheet has once again been unsatisfactory. We still could not be able to score one goal at the match. But we have showed a better defense compared to the first week's humiliation. In addition, we had few chances of scoring opportunity but we have failed to turn them into goals.

It is possible to imply that the improvement was obvious when one sees the motivation showed by my teammates. We have realized that few players are beginning to adapt the way the game should be played after seeing their outstanding performance. At the same time, we have well understood that the need for training is important. Therefor, we have already began searching for training centers which can accommodate us. There is an ongoing discussion with regard to selecting a suitable time that can work for all.

This Sunday, we will have the third match in our division. We expect to give our best even though it is going to be challenging. Some of the players in my team are not satisfied with the scheduling since the game takes place in the evening. But,this does not seem to be a matter of concern that will stop us from achieving our goal!

Korpen Football Week 46: Match Report

We had our first futsal match last Sunday. Being a new endeavor, it entertained a few talking points. My team is assigned in division 13 where new groups are commonly placed. For most of the players in our team it was the first time that we participated in indoor football tournament. And therefore we did not really know what to expect.

The match was scheduled to kick off at 19:45 and we reached the compound approximately one hour before to discuss on important issues regarding team management, for example selecting goal keeper. One task however should have been completed before the game. Our jersey were supposed to be with us at the changing room but instead we dressed vests, which we were using while training. Then we replaced our jersey numbers using a scotch tape and sticked them into our vests. This was due to a delay caused by the company which were producing our shirts.

When the match began we thought it may cause a problem; luckily however, there were not any. We have not had a proper game plan since we thought the game would be more or less similar to the one we exercise at the outdoor pitch. However, it was not the case. We learned that it is important to have tactics and that it requires quick movement with the ball and hence team work was vital. Even the size and the weight of the ball were strange for us. We were all over the place and the match result was unlike other. Our team conceived so many goals and raised the question for more training.

It became as a learning experience for us. We are hopeful that it won't happen again since we are not complacent with the outcome. If we are to learn from the mistakes we did from the previous match and close the loopholes, there is no reason that will stop us from getting a good result.
On Sunday we will have the second game in our division. We are looking forward to improving our performance!

The Night to Remember

This topic is most relevant to : Swedish and International people interested in Ethiopian cultureHabeshas born and raised outside EthiopiaHabeshas Studying and Working outside Ethiopia.

August 19, 2017 was a night like no other since it presented a new experience. I and my friends were preparing to a famous 10 kilo meter running event in Stockholm for the last two months. The name of the event is referred as "Midnattsloppet" and takes place yearly. It is identical to the 10 km Ethiopian great run except that the race takes place during a summer night.

As the event day approaches, there was much anticipation and excitement as to what expect that night. For many of us, it was the first time that we participated in the event. We got our running kits one week before the competition began. The number of participants were approximately 40,000 and the the colour of our jersey were orange-ish, which made the city delightful to watch specially if one was looking from a building. One can say the event was well organised from the start till the end. There were different start groups from the beginning, which were classified based on intended finishing time. I and my friends chose to run with 3D - the group of runners who planned to finish between the time of 50.00 and 54.59 minutes. Every group name was called to go to the gate when the start time approached.

After some dancing exercises and stretching, the countdown of the race started. In the beginning it was hard to run with increased pace since there were many people who were in-front. But after 2 km, I and one of my friends started to find spaces to run with. We started running with good pace to make it through the crowd and finished in 48.06. At the end, we received our medals together with some snacks and water. We were glad with the time since it was below our goal time and considering the fact that we didn't run in a straight manner. Most of the other competitors we encountered were friendly and funny. The energy was fantastic and motivated us to participate in other upcoming races. It was surely an unforgettable experience.

I have been able to interview some questions to one of my running-mates and it is presented as follows:

Is this the first time you were participating?
* No I have participated last year and that was my first time 10k ever.
What's was your goal ?
*This years goal of mine was to break my own personal record which was 1:04:02. It took me 1:01:01 this year though I had leg injury.
Are you satisfied with the result ?
*Pretty much!
Are you satisfied with the competition ?
*Yes I am satisfied with the competition because "Midnattsloppet" is not just running competition but it has a lot of fun things such as live road side music and dance performances. I recommend all audiences of this blog to give it a try next year.
What was the most memorable thing about the event ?
*I would say everything along the track from the first second to the finishing line had been so unforgettable. The feeling was a mix of physical fatigue and psychological courage to finish the race. Hard to explain but guaranteed to make you wait the next competition.

Den Kulturella utsikten mellan Sverige och Etiopien

This topic is most relevant to : Swedish and International people interested in Ethiopian cultureHabeshas born and raised outside EthiopiaHabeshas Studying and Working outside Ethiopia.

Top 7 Events and Activities You Would Want to Participate This Summer

This topic is most relevant to : Swedish and International people interested in Ethiopian cultureHabeshas born and raised outside EthiopiaHabeshas Studying and Working outside Ethiopia.

It has been a while since my last blog entry and the excuse won't be sufficient. All of us are consumed by school or work once in a while and divert our attention to it. Today I pick a topic that should have been written in the beginning of this summer.
Speaking of summer, how do you see the Swedish summer this year? I do not know about you guys but it has been strange from me. I have observed that we have not even seen consecutive sunny days that lasted for a week. The global climate change is a real thing. At least we are glad that we got a break from the snow and you might regard me as an optimist for that:-). Fortunately, there are events and activities that can deviate our concern for the weather. The following are a list of events or activities you can indulge yourself in (listed in no particular order).

1.Football match in Hökaringen: Every Sunday afternoon there is a football game.If you are interested in this, let me know in the comments section and it can be organized.

2.Ethiopian Festival day in Stockholm: This event takes place yearly. Most of the time it is conducted in the beginning or middle of August. The event includes football matches, running competitions for children, traditional coffee ceremony, tasty Ethiopian foods and music accompanied by DJs.

3.Ethiopian Festival in Rome: With team Ethio-Sweden's football team promotion to the first division last year after winning a trophy in the second league, the festival at Rome looks ahead to be interesting.

4.Cruising: After a good analysis of the Swedish weather, one can choose a sunny day to cruise with the ship. Seeing the archipelago while standing on the deck on a warm day will surely leave you with unforgettable memories.

6.Stockholm Culture Festival in Mid-August: In the previous two years, Mahmoud Ahmed, Aster Aweke, and Alemayehu Eshete were among the artists who were on stage. According to the Stockholm city website, there will not be an Ethiopian musician who will be playing live, but instead, a famous singer from Senegal will be performing. It would be nice if there would be a possibility that an Ethiopian DJ will play music in that event. In any way, it is going to an event worth watching.

7.Midnattsloppet (Midnight running): This is a  10Km running event that will take place in Mid August. As the name indicates, the running takes place in the middle of the night. There will be many participants for the race so it would be a nice idea to register and run with your friends for the fun or for the medal. Furthermore, one would need to train ahead of the competition which can keep you fit on summer, and together with a goal - how good is that?

Review: Teddy Afro's New Album - Best Ever ?

This topic is most relevant to : Swedish and International people interested in Ethiopian cultureHabeshas born and raised outside EthiopiaHabeshas Studying and Working outside Ethiopia.

Ethiopian musician Tewdros Kassahun known with the stage name "Teddy Afro" has released a new album this week. Initially, it was intended to be released two weeks ago at the eve of Ethiopian Easter. However, according to ethiopicalink radio station, events associated with album cover printing and a disagreement between major retailers caused the delay.

There is always an anticipation from his fans that he would deliver the best songs in his album and it would not be an exaggeration if one says he leveled up to that expectation. However, song expert Aberham Tesfaye has criticized the production of the song that is entitled "Ethiopia" which was released two weeks ago from the recent album. On the other hand, songs like "Olan Yizo","Atse Tewdros", "Mar Eske Tuwaf" and "Yamral" are getting high admiration from his followers on social media. In addition, from  the interactions I had with my close friends, I had been able to observe that many of them like both the melody and the lyrics of the songs. Some of them have even claimed his recent work as the best ever. Do you agree? or is it an early impression ?

Considering the previous albums and their success, it is a sure thing that many will be entertained at his upcoming concerts while performing his latest songs. We hope the promoters in Sweden will do their best to bring him  for a live stage performance. On a last note, I personally thought he should have labelled his album "Olan Yizo"  since I found it catchy. What are your thoughts and opinions regarding the new album?

The Swedish Winter vs The Ethiopian /

This topic is most relevant to : Swedish and International people interested in Ethiopian cultureHabeshas born and raised outside EthiopiaHabeshas Studying and Working outside Ethiopia.*For optional viewing experience, click "view web version below*

One of the challenges that one has to endure in Sweden is the winter. Beginning from mid-October, an individual should be prepared for the cold season that goes through until  the end of March - at which time the Spring begins.

From my experience, each winter season  has its own trend in terms of how much colder it gets and how many days it snow. That is, it is difficult to predict the temperature measurement and amount of snow fall for each months definitively. The towns in the northern Sweden get more colder than the one which are in the south since they are closer to the arctic. Approximately, the temperature could reach until -30 degree centigrade.
It's also observable that the day time will become lesser at this season. Consequently, the day light saving time will come to an effect at the beginning of November, which will make the Swedish time zone  to GMT+1 until the end of March. Then time zone will shift forward to GMT+2.

A snow fall could cause a significant disturbance on transportation and regular day to day activities. Fortunately. there is a good infrastructure to handle such challenges. In a normal winter morning, it's common to see trucks cleaning vehicle and pedestrian roads. In addition, homes are well-equipped with heaters. Furthermore, gearing oneself up with the right type of clothes is vital to make it through this season. There are also winter activities that one can be interested. For instance, people often like to go skiing with their friends or family members.

Coming from Ethiopia, where almost every month in the calendar is warm, the experience of this winter is two-fold. In one hand, it is exciting to see the snow for the first time while in the other,
one has to adjust him/herself to deal with the season. Proper caution should be taken specially in the way one dress' to overcome the freezing season.Thermal under-wears are a must if the temperature is getting really low.In addition, wearing shoe that is suitable for the season will avoid unexpected injuries. In Ethiopia, the months starting from June until August are deemed as winter. Since the country is located in equator,it snows very rarely while heavy rainfalls are very common. For me,a memorable moment to mention from this season is eating toasted corn while walking in the streets with my friends. What is yours? What is your impression of the winter?

"The Swedish Version of the posts may appear inaccurate. As my Swedish language skill is intermediate, I'm taking the use of translation services as support."

This week marks the beginning of the main fasting season as stated in the Ethiopian orthodox religion. Many followers of this doctrine in Ethiopia and abroad start fasting from this time until the festivity of Easter. It is very common that some people will not eat until 12.00 while some wait until 15:00 to have lunch.

During this fasting period, it is forbidden to eat foods which have meat contents and in addition it is not allowed to take dairy products such as milk, yogurt and cheese. Furthermore,it is not possible to eat egg. As a result, many of the delicious Ethiopian foods that involve meat will not be consumed by followers of the religion. No need to worry - there are still delicious fasting foods that are available for consumption. The following is the list of my top five food picks you can experience in this fasting period.

1.Yetsom Beyaynetu: This meal is the most typical dish that is taken during this season. It is a mixed combination of vegetables such as 'Fasolia','Gomen' ,'Selata' with 'misir' or 'shiro wot' together with 'Injera'. It is very tasteful.

2.Bozena Shiro: A tasteful and warm shiro variant commonly served with a brick-like pot usually referred as 'shekla'.

3.Yetsom firfir: Fragments of 'Injera' mixed with vegetables and spicy ingredients such as Berbere.

4.Chechebsa: Small peices of a Pan cake look alike which is known as 'kita' mixed with spicy ingredients.Very delicious!

5.Genfo:A baked flour together with a spicy sauce.

The Ethiopian Epiphany

This topic is most relevant to : Swedish and International people interested in Ethiopian cultureHabeshas born and raised outside EthiopiaHabeshas Studying and Working outside Ethiopia.

Just like most holidays, the Ethiopian Epiphany is celebrated with a dazzling ceremony. In Amharic, the term is coined as "timket".

It is the holiday that is commemorated eleven days after Christmas. In Ethiopian orthodox churches, the holiday has a special ceremony. It's a religious tradition whereby "tabot" - a sacred item that belongs at the church, will come out of the usual place and stays for a night or so at an open area inside a tent. People from different areas come to that location for spiritual prayer and songs- most spending the night until dawn.
In the morning after the ritual prayer, there comes a time where people drink and sprinkle on their faces "tsebel", a holy water used to symbolize baptism. After this the "tabot" will start heading back to the church while the crowd accompanies it.This is a memorable event that should be seen by people who are interested in Ethiopian culture.

There were few talking points at the concerts held in Alvik and Globen. Both of the concerts have attracted many fans in Sweden. In the concert hall of Alvik where Abdu sang, some were disappointed with the temperature settings of the venue. There were no ventilation system inside and most were sweating. Furthermore, some people were asked to pay with cash or Swish only. As a result, this led to unusual line at the ATM line closest to the hall not to mention the time it took as an additional obstacle. It has also been observed that, this was the case in Ephrem's concert.
It would have been favorable if fans knew the method of payment at the door beforehand. In Ephrem's concert, few people were returned after they heard that the concert arena were full. Some of these fans said prices to entrance were going up. It was the opinion of some that, it could have been better if online ticketing system were applied since there were audiences who arrived from another city to participate at the event.

The venue at Globen were better in terms of design and sound system compared to the one in Alvik while the price of beverages were better at the latter. Apart from minor incidents, there were no disturbances at the stage where the musicians presented their work. Overall, many were entertained at the concerts with few room left for improvement. Were you there? What's your opinion?

On the other hand, there are speculations that the next musicians to arrive at the capital are Lij Michael and Madingo Afework. Lij Michael has been popular for integrating hip hop style music to Ethiopian songs. The title "Zemenay mariye" has been a hit song and favored by many. He's currently working on a new song together with Sami-Dan. The name of the song is entitled, "Ayzosh". On another  note, Madingo has published his latest album labelled "Swedilat"  two years ago and has got a lot of admiration. In an interview with a radio station in Addis Ababa, popular artist Teddy afro has applauded the album specially the song "godanaw godanaw (Yearategnaw Tatsh )".
